Description
It is fall and a single leaf has fallen to the ground, carried where a traveler on a nature walk sees it and contemplates its beauty and elegance...one fallen leaf turning brown and beginning to decay, yet still brilliant and beautiful in its own right! Soon, along with the others, it will fully decay and become rich and fertile soil for new maple seeds to take root, carried there by the wind, too! There, the life cycle will begin all over again!
This is a detail of the original work. I have rotated the picture so that the stem side is facing down. This makes for a very interesting perspective on this fallen leaf that is turning colors! This particular version has the sky as a solid gold color, which echoes the colors of this fallen leaf. As the leaf falls from the tree and makes its bittersweet journey down to the earth, it "flies" in the sky, if only for a brief moment; hence, the title: "To But Touch the Sky Once"!

It is easy to get a little despondent when the season of Autumn draws to a close and Winter is upon us, but there is some good to be gained and some life lessons to be gleaned with this season! For instance, deciduous trees lose their leaves during a process called abscission , or "the dropping of a part that is no longer needed" or "falling away after its purpose is finished". In other words, the trees and plants rid themselves of the parts they no longer need and go dormant! In this way, they can conserve all of the essential nutrients and not expend precious energy! It is hard to believe, too, that all of those beautiful Spring bloomers, such as gorgeous Tulips, are "winter hardy" and are preparing to bloom gloriously from underneath the ground! Winter doesn't mean the "end" for many flowers (Perennials) and deciduous trees, though things may look from our point of view above the ground rather bleak, many good things are happening beneath our feet! So, just as the bear that hibernates during the winter to conserve energy and nutrients, we, too, can take extra rest during this season and be ready to enjoy Spring! Thanks for the compliment and your support, Wayne! Take heart in knowing that the Spring of Renewal is always just around the corner when winter does actually arrive!

Thank my dear, Graciela! You are so generous in your support and kind in your comments! You honor me with your compliments, as you are a master at what you do! I am so glad that you appreciate this work of a fallen leaf, fallen from the sky and now landing on the ground! What interests me more than its current state, is the journey that the leaf took before it hit the ground! We all have our journeys that we have to take in living this thing we call "Life"! Let us hope that we can excel to our highest potential before the journey comes to an end! Blessings to you, my friend!
