Description

It is a beautiful day in the area above Tellico Plains in the Appalachian region. It has rained enough in the preceding weeks to help the flow of the cascading falls to wow and reward the onlooker! I wanted to draw the viewer's eye into the scene and help them to feel as though they were standing right in front of the falls and taking in the majestic and impressive view of the force of the water dancing across the rocks in several tiers and then landing into a reservoir down below the falls. I was there this spring to capture these falls but had "photo bombers" standing in the way both up on the rocks in the area of the falls and the place where I was taking the picture, so that is why I decided to paint the scene, instead! Bald River Falls is truly a beautiful place that I hope to inspire many visitors to visit!
This is a revised version of the painting that I did earlier in 2016. After being asked by one of my most special and dear fans (my dad!) to paint in the waterfall fuller, I couldn't say no! So, this version is the way my dad would like to see Bald River Falls after a hard long rain and covering more of the rocks. I must confess, though, that I initially had a hard time covering up the beautiful moss colored rock, so I ended up repainting in some of the rock details in the background, so that the viewer could at least catch a glimpse of the rock formation. I really like this idea of giving more detail underneath the water flow of the waterfall, not only because it looks more realistic, but because I think it helps to tell the story of why the rock flows the way it does...

The waterfall starts at the top of the mountain and is day-lighted and kissed from the sun before cascading down multiple tiers on the left, but some of it is caught in a pool, or basin, on the right before it gently flows over the rocks jutting out. You are standing on the bridge to the right of the painting (close to the little island of small deciduous trees and rocks). You can almost feel now the fine mist of water as it flows briskly over the smooth well-worn rocks, and can't help but smile to yourself at the sounds of the water symphony with both the gushing sound of water rushing fast on the left of the waterfall and on the right, a soft trickling sound of water; this is a taste of pure heaven that helps to calm your mind and empty of any worries, just like the waterfall!
