According to the Hemerocallis Society, the word Hemerocallis is derived from two Greek words meaning "beauty" and "day," referring to the fact that each flower lasts only one day. It is interesting to note that the day lily is overwintered as a bulb in a cool dark place. In other words, it completely dies back in the winter, and then makes its bright and memorable appearance for one day.
