Description
"How Much Is Enough?"
I could write a whole book or two about this subject, but I will try to summarize my thoughts about this subject of "How much is enough?" How many trees will we cut down and mountains level as we mine for minerals and stones and destroy the delicate balance of all living things as we drill deep into the earth for fracking? As Americans, we do more than our fair share--not only are we destroying our own country without thinking about what we are leaving in place for our children and our children's children, but then we feel we have a license to do the same in other countries!
I know that as I write this on my I-pad in my air conditioned home with electricity, that I feel a bit of a hypocrite, but, in my defense, I do pride myself in reducing and reusing and living in a smaller home that, to many Americans, would be "beneath their standards" (i.e. 500 sq. ft. and one bath for four people--but, we are renovating our garage downstairs to expand our living space some, but still only modestly!). I try to be truly grateful for what I do have, and my husband and I are striving to be "debt free", instead of wrapping up our happiness in amassing more and more, so this is what I am getting at--"how much will it take for our insatiable American appetite for all things material" before we say, "enough is enough"?
The idea behind this work is to make this abstract work with trees look like they are on fire with unquenchable desire--a desire that is consuming our forests! It also represents our insatiable appetite for consumerism unchecked, as well as an idea of being "out of balance" with our natural world and with others in our pursuit for all things material! I hope it inspires thought in a new and more positive direction.
