Description
The Significance of a Rainbow in the Bible:
The significance, or meaning of the Rainbow (according to biblestudy.org) can be found in the bible in three places: Genesis, Ezekiel, and Revelations!
The first place we need to look in is in Genesis, where it serves as a reminder for us all of God's covenant that is still as strong today as it was in the beginning...
12. And God said, This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth."
Genesis9:12-13 (ESV).
In the second place, we find it in the book of Ezekiel, where it is referred to as the "wheel in the middle of a wheel"! The website biblestudy.org, explains that..."In his first vision from God, known as the 'wheel in the middle of a wheel' vision, the prophet Ezekiel compares the glory of God to what he saw"...
1. As the rainbow appears that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of His brightness all around (Ezekiel 1:28)
Finally, we go to the book Revelations to see a further glimpse of God's glory...
1. After these things I looked, and behold, a door opened in heaven . . . 3. And He Who was sitting was in appearance like a jasper stone and a sardius stone; and a rainbow was around the throne . . . (Revelation 4:1, 3)
The basic colors of the rainbow as we know it are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, too, and have been interpreted to have meaning as well throughout the bible! Red, Scarlet, Crimson, and Purple (singly or together) are significant colors during the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness with the HolyTabernacle Moses made, and in the garments the High Priests and other priests wore (Exodus, Judges, Lamentations, Proverbs, and in Revelations)! The color of sapphire or blue is mentioned in Numbers, Ezekiel, and Esther. The color white actually contains all of these colors and is associated with pureness and Holiness, like that of an angel or of God (Leviticus, II Chronicles, and Revelation)!
Remember, also, that a rainbow can, technically, only happen after rain, as the sun's rays refract and are reflected in the water droplets...creating a rainbow; however, symbolically, in our spiritual lives, we can only experience the brightest times of our lives--seeing a glimpse of God's Glory--after we have gone through trials or tribulations (symbolized as rain) and come out on the "other side" of our faith when we learn to put our trust in Him and in His Everlasting Covenant with us!
