Description
"Tulip Utopia"
Often, I will use a lot of symbolism in my artwork. The types of symbolism in "Tulip Utopia" are found in my selection of color for the flowers (i.e. Red), the symbolism behind the type of flower I selected (in this case, Tulips), and lastly, the symbolism of a rainbow and its spiritual significance!
In understanding the "language and symbolism" of colors, after black and white, red is, by far, the most prominent and important! It most often appears on flags across the globe. It is synonymous with the feeling of passion and love. Japanese children even draw the sun with a large red circle (according to: http://www.colormatters.com/the-meanings-of-colors/red)!
"The meaning of tulips is generally perfect love. Like many flowers, different colors of tulips also often carry their own significance. Red tulips are most strongly associated with true love..." (proflowers.com).
There is much symbolism regarding the Rainbow in the bible. The bible refers to a rainbow as "the wheel in the middle of a wheel" (Exodus 13:21). It is the symbol of God's covenant in the bible that he would never again destroy the earth by flood--"And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you and every living creature with you, for everlasting generations: 14. I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth..." (Genesis 9:12-13, biblestudy.org). In Ezekiel 1:28 compares the glory and majesty of God to a rainbow--"As the rainbow appears that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of His brightness all around" (Ezekiel 1:28).
Also, tones of Red (as Scarlet and Crimson) have special spiritual significance in the bible, as well as the secondary color derived from this primary one--purple (made by mixing red and blue together!); not only is red associated with negative connotations (as is the case with sin and blood), but also positive ones--symbolizing prosperity and the sacrifice of Jesus dying for our sins, and with purple, royalty! Interestingly, red as a wavelength in a rainbow appears as the first color from the top and when, on a rare occasion you are lucky enough to see a double rainbow, the second rainbow's colors appear in the reverse, with violet, or purple appearing at the top! In the spectrum of colors, the red wavelength is the longest and the violet is the shortest. In conclusion, the color Red "triumphs" over the other colors, and that is why I chose it for this work!
