Description
This work is a tribute to my dear, sweet and lovely mother!
Born on May 14th back in the 40's, she was the daughter of my late beloved grandparents, the Stewarts. She was a devoted daughter and sister and grew up moving around, mostly in the Southeast, but did live in Ohio for a few years and was later able to skip two grades in school in Tennessee and graduate early from high school!
She was bright and beautiful and had her whole life ahead of her...full of possibilities for success, as she was excelling in her first year of college! Unfortunately, tragedy struck her life while she was traveling with a friend who was driving on a popular highway in Tennessee many years ago; a group of girls in a car that was about to collide with the one my mother was in had decided they wanted to have a "night on the town" and were drinking and driving! Multiple girls were riding in that car when, while driving under the influence, the driver of the car swerved and broadsided the car my mother's friend, Sally, was driving and hit on the passenger side where my mom was seated! The force of the impact sent part of my mother's head and face into the windshield to the right side of her...the glass slashing into her face and almost detaching one of her eyes! Sadly, some of the girls riding in the other car didn't make it, but my mother clung to her life for three days while she was in a coma! When she had arrived at the hospital, she had already lost a lot of blood, but fortunately, there was a skilled plastic surgeon on duty at the hospital and was able to piece my mother's face back together, using a recent picture! Unfortunately, when my mother came out of coma, there was no on-going long-term treatment plan for any follow-up plastic surgeries, because you see, my mother didn't have insurance and was left with the choice of suing her very own best friend, Sally, who was driving the car she was in, but was in no way, at fault, or go without any further medical treatment (the drunk driver of the car that had hit her, of course, did not have insurance)! Broken and in a state of shock and despair, my mother was released from the hospital! Because of this decision (right or wrong!), my mother has suffered needlessly for years and still suffers to this day! When she was delivering her firstborn, my brother, she almost died while in labor, because her pelvic bone and hip had been fractured in the accident and never was set! For years, she has suffered from terrible and debilitating migraines (mostly likely resulting from a traumatic brain injury) and kidney problems, and in later years to come, a stroke and grand Mal seizures! Now, she is completely bed-ridden and has impaired mobility, except for the limited use of her hands!
In short, please don't drink and drive! Know your alcohol limits...a young female of 150 pounds can not drink more than one to two drinks for several hours, for example! Better yet, plan to stay at home with friends for several hours (and eat a meal to control blood sugar levels) or have a designated driver, or if one is not available, call a taxi! Hey, even your mom or dad may be mad when you call them, but they would rather you pick up the phone and call them, no matter the time! Better yet, wait to drink until you are of legal drinking age (21) and are emotionally mature and responsible enough to make sound decisions, or just say "no" to the alcoholic drinks and opt for non-alcoholic drinks, instead! After all, when some of your friends might be tempted to make fun of you, remind them that drinking and driving is NOT cool, by the way! Stay safe and keep sober...lives are at stake--not just yours, but others!

A heart wrenching tribute to your Mother. So glad your mother survived. Even though she has suffered since the accident she had a wonderful daughter that I am sure has brought her much joy. It's a beautiful picture of her.

Oh my gosh, you have the same beautiful smile and eyes I wore my hair like that for my Senior in High School picture. I was born in 1944.. your mom and I are close in age. Wonderful tribute, Kimberlee... If it saves one person from injuring another, then you have done a noble thing , F/L
Kimberlee Baxter replied:
Thanks so much, Maria! That outfit she is wearing in the picture, by the way, was made by my grandmother who was an expert seamstress and liked to design clothes! Maria, the thing I remember most affectionately about my mother is how fun she was when I was growing up! She loved to dance and won contests even; consequently, I learned to twist and bop along side of her as a little girl, and later even learned some cool disco moves in the 70's! She knew how to tell a story, especially a ghost story, that would keep you on the edge of your seat! All the neighborhood kids, particularly the teenagers, were drawn to my mother, as she never forgot how to be silly, spontaneous, and creative in having fun...late night card games with stories told into the morning hours, drives into the starry night with her Mustang and moon roof, seeing "Godzilla" terrorize Japan at drive-in theaters for the gazzionith time with a car load of my cousins! Those were the times that mostly filled my childhood days with wonder! That is why I wish to pass on that same child-like wonder and awe for the Great Mystery in life to my children and grandchildren! Thanks for caring, and yes, I hope to save lives, if I can!

First of all, Happy Birthday to your beautiful Mother! Thank you so much for sharing her story with us. I will in turn share it with my daughter who will be leaving for college in a year. You are an inspiration and the photo you posted is stunning.
Kimberlee Baxter replied:
Berta, thank you so much for your very kind comments! I will pass on the compliment to her! Yes, please share this story with your daughter...it is those seeds we plant for our children that really stick with them when they get into tough situations when they first get out on their own!
